Introduction

AMU PLAZA Kumamoto is located right in front of Kumamoto Station and has many shops ranging from fashion to gourmet food, miscellaneous goods, and amusement. The most attractive feature of this facility is its large atrium space known as the “Boken no Mori” (Adventure Forest), which connects the first to seventh floors. It’s about 35 meters high, and a 10-meter-wide waterfall inspired by Nabegataki Falls, a tourist spot in Kumamoto, flows down from a height of 10 meters, making it a thrilling experience. There are also lots of fun features, such as a giant ceramic plate with an illustration from the popular manga, ONE PIECE, drawn by Kumamoto-born cartoonist Eiichiro Oda, an outdoor garden called “Oyane Terrace,” and “experiential content” hidden in seven locations in the building! “Hidden Kumamon” are also scattered throughout each floor.
“Higo Yokamon Ichiba” is a souvenir shop and food hall that is directly connected to Kumamoto Station. It features an assortment of 60 shops and stalls that offer souvenirs from Kumamoto, including famous sweets, local specialties, as well as craft sake, and allow you to enjoy local delicacies such as horse sashimi, seafood, and ramen. “Higo Yokamon Ichiba” is conveniently located in front of the ticket gate for Kumamoto Station where the Shinkansen bullet train also makes stops. You’ll be greeted by Kumamon at the entrance, so feel free to use this as a photo spot.

Introduction

Suizenji Jojuen Garden is a strolling garden that was built by three generations of lords from the Higo Hosokawa clan, starting with Hosokawa Tadatoshi, Lord of the Kumamoto Domain. In this garden, you can enjoy a graceful stroll around a pond that is fed by underground spring water coming from Mt. Aso while taking in views of the garden’s features, including tsukiyama (an artificial hill), ukiishi (partially submerged stones), and pine trees.
