Karatsu Area

Name Karatsu Castle
Introduction Karatsu Castle was built by Terazawa Shimanokami Hirotaka, a retainer of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, over a period of seven years, beginning in 1602. Because the pine-covered shores to the east and west of the castle made it look like a crane with spread wings, the castle is also known as “Maizuru-jou,” or “Dancing Crane Castle.” It’s a famous spot for viewing cherry blossoms and wisteria as well. The present donjon was completed in 1966, and now serves as a folk museum. Karatsu ware and materials from Karatsu Domain are on display, making it possible to connect with the history of Karatsu.
